Drumroll Please: The Most Prestigious Movie Awards

One of the most fun aspects of watching film throughout the year is being able to be part of the conversation during awards season. Movie awards are something that we all love to pay attention to. They make for great water cooler talk at the office!

Of course, with cinema being such a huge industry, there are more awards ceremonies and bodies than you can even keep up with. Because of this, we always tend to gravitate to the biggest and the best.

Without further ado, here is a short rundown of the most prestigious film awards that you should absolutely keep tabs on.

The Oscars - King of the Movie Awards

There is no doubting that the annual Academy Awards, or Oscars, are the most renowned and prestigious film awards in the world.

From Meryl Streep to Tom Hanks to recent winners like Olivia Colman, to win an Academy Award marks the absolute pinnacle of any performer’s career.

If you are lucky and talented enough to pick up an Oscar, then you can be sure that your name is written into the history books of cinema for all time.

The Palme d’Or - French Recognition

The Palme d’Or is the highest possible award that is given out annually at the prestigious Cannes Film Festival. It is awarded to what the judging panel of industry experts and luminaries decide is the best entry at that year’s festival. Unlike the Oscars which is a one-night-only event, Cannes Film Festival runs for a week.

Outside of Hollywood, the Palme d’Or is considered to be one of the most distinguished prizes that a film can be awarded.

In the past, films such as Blue Is The Warmest Colour, The Pianist, Pulp Fiction, and All That Jazz have been selected as the winner of the Palme d’Or.

The BAFTAS - The Best of British

The British version of the Oscars, the BAFTA awards are an annual celebration of British and international cinema. The ceremony covers a multitude of categories including acting, directing, and producing.

In recent times, the BAFTAS have taken place a few weeks before the Oscars. Many experts regard the evening’s winners as potential front runners for upcoming Academy Award glory.

The Golden Bear - The Pride of Germany

The Golden Bear is the highest honour that can be bestowed on a film showing at the Berlin Film Festival. This is another event that spreads over a few days with multiple films on view.

It's one of the ‘big three’ on the film festival circuit alongside Cannes and Venice and there is a historic link between Golden Bear winners and Oscar winners.

Past films to have been awarded the Golden Bear include Spirited Away, Sense and Sensibility, Rain Man, and 12 Angry Men.

And The Award Goes To...

The great thing about the wide expanse of movie awards across the world means that film fans are exposed to a far greater number of quality titles than they otherwise have been.
