The Story Behind The Order - Surgical Decision Making Unit at Morriston Hospital

At Trophies Plus Medals we believe that the key to success is building strong relationships with our customers and community. That is why we make it a priority to get to know the people we serve. We are always looking for ways to better understand the needs and wants of those who chose us for their trophies, medals and awards. By getting to know our customers, we are able to not only provide better products and services, but we can also create a stronger community. We value the feedback and insights our customers have to offer, and we are constantly working to improve and grow based on their input. We are excited to introduce a new series where we will be featuring our valued customers as guests. We believe that behind every order, there is a story worth sharing. Whether it is a special occasion, a business venture, or a personal project, we want to understand the reasons behind our customer's choices and how our products and services have helped them to recognise an achievement or occasion.

Join us as we discover the unique and individual stories behind our customer's orders. We recently spoke to the Surgical Decision Making Unit (SMDU) at Morriston Hospital to learn more about the cause behind their upcoming challenge and how Trophies Plus Medals are helping them to recognise their upcoming achievement.

Tell us who you are?

We are a group of 27 colleagues that work in a surgical decision making unit (SDMU) in Morriston Hospital, Swansea. SDMU is an extremely busy unit, that consists of 5 different specialities, general surgery, urology, vascular, Oral and maxillofacial and ENT. Within the unit we care for acutely unwell patients, triage patients from GP services/ A+E and care for patients pre and post operation. We are a group of nurses and health care support workers, that are used to working under extreme pressures so why not add another challenge to the mix!

What’s your story?

We are taking on the Welsh three peaks on the 5th of July 2023 which includes hiking mount Snowdon (1085m), Cadair Idris (893m) and Pen Y Fan (886m) and if this isn't a challenge enough, we have to complete the challenge in 24hours.

Even though we all like to keep fit in our own ways, most of our team have never completed in a challenge like this before, so we are having to put in the training to ensure we complete this challenge safely and within the time frame.

Why are you taking on the challenge?

It is a cause very close to our hearts; We are taking part in this event in Memory and support of our Morriston Hospital colleague Sister Jessica Knight who recently sadly lost her fight to oesophageal cancer. Jess was a very highly thought of colleague who dedicated her nursing career to the surgical speciality. She was very special to many colleagues within the hospital and we are honoured to be walking in her memory. As well as walking in Memory of our Colleague Jess we have decided to fundraise this event in which will be split between Jess's family and a small but mighty charity Guts Charity UK, which is the only UK charity funding research into the digestive system, including oesophageal cancer.

As this challenge is no mean feat, our training is underway and we are embracing the Welsh weather taking in the wonderful scenery that surrounds us. As we all work shift work, it has been a struggle to train all together, so we have been training in smaller groups at least once a week, when we have time off together to get the miles in. It has boosted the moral a great deal within the unit and it has been so lovely how we have all come together even more so as a team in organising and training for this event. We have been overwhelmed with the support we have received from people so far and our fundraising is going well to ensure we raise as much as possible for this very worthy cause.

Out of our scrubs and still getting the work done!
