The Story Behind The Order - Mates N Dates
At Trophies Plus Medals we believe that the key to success is building strong relationships with our customers and community. That is why we make it a priority to get to know the people we serve. By getting to know our customers, we are able to not only provide better products and services, but we can also create a stronger community. We value the feedback and insights our customers have to offer, and we are constantly working to improve and grow based on their input. We are excited to introduce a new series where we will be featuring our valued customers as guests. We believe that behind every order, there is a story worth sharing. Whether it is a special occasion, a business venture, or a personal project, we want to understand the reasons behind our customer's choices and how our products and services have helped them to recognise an achievement or occasion.
Join us as we discover the unique and individual stories behind our customer's orders. We recently spoke to Dates N Mates to learn more about the cause behind their order and how Trophies Plus Medals are helping them to create an event to remember.
Who are you?
Dates-n-Mates is Scotland’s first friendship and dating agency run by and for adults with a learning disability. We have 15 years of experience connecting people in Glasgow, Renfrewshire, Aberdeen , Falkirk, Stirling and Clackmannanshire. We specifically address the social and emotional needs of adults with learning disabilities by providing a wide range of dating and friendship opportunities for our members, with the aim of reducing social isolation and loneliness, and supporting the building of meaningful friendships and relationships.
We run between 12-14 social events a month including cinema clubs, museum visits, snooker league, party nights, meals out, coffee and cake afternoons, days out and bowling etc. All our events take place in accessible main stream venues, which allows our members to become increasingly visible and active in their communities and consequently more confident in these main stream spaces.
Our work is underpinned by a human rights-based approach. We believe it is people’s right to live life free of discrimination and to develop friendships and relationships of their choosing, to love and be loved.
What is your story?
Our aim is to give our members the opportunities to have the same social experiences the rest of us take for granted. Simple things, like going for a coffee with friends, trips to the cinema, going for lunch or out for a drink on a Friday night. The Dates-n-Mates project is run by and for people with learning disabilities. Each local branch is lead by a Directors with lived experience of learning disability.
As adults with learning disabilities progress from school/college and beyond, their social circle tends to shrink to either family and/or paid for support. Their school and college friends move on, but they often remain frozen in time, with little or no social life, and very little opportunity of ever finding a partner.
At Dates-n-Mates, we provide a way for people to connect and build the friendships they need to help improve their mental health and wellbeing, as well as helping them feel included, valued and a part of their communities.
In addition, through our workshops on Confidence Building, Conversational Skills and Sex and Relationships, we help equip our members with the knowledge they need to make informed choices, to take control of their own lives, and to be responsible for their own decisions.
What cause are you raising funds for?
We are hosting a Gala Awards Dinner in May to celebrate the success of our members. Dates-n-Mates relies on funders to continue its work for adults with learning disabilities, and we rely heavily on support from local businesses to make sure our members are given the same opportunities to develop and strengthen social connections, and to feel valued and active participants their local communities. Adults with learning disabilities continue to face huge challenges, but meeting people, making friends and building lasting relationships shouldn't be one of them.
It's brilliant to be able to award our amazing members with such beautiful awards from Trophies Plus Medals that normally we wouldn’t have the budget for. Having these awards will make a huge different in making the night feel special for our members and make it one to remember!
