Have a Field Day! 10 Must Have Field Day Activities and Trophies For Your Awards Ceremony

Beautiful weather brings great outdoor activities. And that means it's time for field day!

Everyone has positive childhood memories of their favourite field day event. But what kids don't know is just how hard it can be to plan a field day.

Have you been tasked with planning a field day but aren't sure where to start? We've got you covered. Here's a list of the top 10 field day activities you need to include at yours.

1. Sack Race

This one requires donations of burlap sacks or old pillowcases. Instead, you could have each student bring his or her own pillowcase. But make sure their parents don't mind getting dirty!

Line up the children and have them race in their sacks to the finish line.

2. Tug-O-War

This classic game is a battle of strength, so make sure each side is well matched. Find a long rope and tie knots on each side. In the middle, put either a colourful line or a puddle of water.

The first team to touch the centre loses the competition.

3. Egg and Spoon Race

Here, the children will hold a spoon between their teeth to manoeuvre an egg. During this race, the children have to be careful. Otherwise, they'll drop the egg, and their team will be out of the race!

Whoever reaches the finish line with their egg still intact is the winner.

4. Obstacle Course

My personal favourite of all field day activities! Create obstacles for the kids to crawl over, under, and around. Whoever can manoeuvre the obstacle the quickest is the winner!

You can even add in challenges during the obstacle course. This makes sure it's not all about speed. Check out this list of obstacle course ideas for more inspiration.

5. Three-Legged Race

Divide the kids up into teams of two. Each team will have two legs tied together. They'll have to coordinate to win the race.

6. Freeze Tag

In this variation of tag, everyone who is touched by the player that is "it" is frozen. Untagged players have the chance to "unfreeze" those players. The game ends once the player that is "it" has frozen all of the other players, or until time runs out!

7. Finger Painting

This one is gonna get messy! Get some tarps, some paper, and don't forget some parkas to protect everyone's clothes! Set up some stations that have soap and water for regular hand washing.

Award this cute trophy to the best painting!

8. Hula-Hoop Ring Toss

For this fun game, you'll need to push some sticks into the ground. Make more distant sticks worth more points. Whoever gets the highest score wins!

9. Balloon Pop

In this game, give each kid their own stash of inflated balloons and their own chair. They must race to grab a balloon, bring that balloon to their chair, and sit on the balloon until it pops. After a certain time limit, the one with the most popped balloons wins.

10. Parachute Popcorn

In this fun game, have all the children hold the edges of a parachute. Throw on some plastic balls. Have the children make waves on the parachute and see if they can manage that without any of the balls falling out.

If you have several parachutes, you can have the groups compete to see who can hold more balls without dropping them. Check out this visual guide for a better understanding of how the game works.
