What to Say When Giving an Award

What to Say When Giving an Award

"A winner is a dreamer who never gives up" - Nelson Mandela.

Winning something or receiving an award is an unforgettable moment in a person's life.

If you're given the responsibility and privilege of giving an award, what can you do to make it a success? Keep reading to find out what to say when giving an award.

Plan Ahead

Before you hand out the award, you may need to prepare some finer details of the actual event.

Make sure to order the trophy, medal or plaque well ahead of time in case anything needs to adjustments or replacing.

Whether it's a formal ceremony or a small get together, plan all the details beforehand. For example, where it will take place, the dress code, number of invitees and what kind of food is available.

Depending on the award, you may even decide to notify the media. They will most likely attend the event and take some snapshots of the award-giving.

And most importantly, remember to invite the recipient of the award!

What to Say When Giving an Award

When presenting an award, a short speech is generally required. Being prepared is key. Here are 4 simple steps on how to prepare an award presentation speech.

1. Start Strong

At the beginning of the award presentation speech, start with a touching, or even funny introduction. Try to keep it casual, but at the same time make the recipient feel valued. This is their big day after all

You can also give a description of the recipient outside of their accomplishments. For example, are they a joker? Do they have any funny quirks? Or are they the office "Mum"?

But, be cautious! Make sure it's not overly personal or embarrassing in any way.

2. Build Up Anticipation

Next, build up anticipation for the award giving.

Talk about why they deserve the award, the achievements or steps they've taken to reach their goals. Again, keep it brief and stick to their most significant accomplishments.

But, the speech shouldn't just be a list of their many accomplishments. It should tell the tale of how and why the recipient achieved this honour.

3. Wrap it Up

Finish up the speech with the actual presentation. And don't forget to start off the applause!

4. Practice Makes Perfect

After you've made the perfect speech, practice, practice, practice!

Practice in front of the mirror and see how your facial expressions are. You can even record yourself and watch it back to see how you're doing.

Then practice in front of your family or friends. Watch their reactions and ask for constructive criticism. If they give some tips, be humble and take it on board.

After you've made all necessary adjustments, practice hard until you're confident without your notes.

The Big Day

At an appropriate time in the speech, invite the recipient to stand next to you. Then, at the planned moment, you can say the words "And the winner is..." as you hand over the award.

Shake their hand, or hug them if it's appropriate. And make sure to stop and pose for the photo as you hand them the award.

Get the Name Right!

Whatever you do, make sure you get the name right. We don't have to mention Steve Harvey's epic fail when he announced the wrong Miss World winner!
